Inward Role of the restaurant
As a family owned business, most of the family members do have a role to play in the restaurant. As the head chef, Papa Wu prepares most of the dishes as well as overseeing the operation of the kitchen. Grandpa Wu works as a cashier who is responsible for handling cash payment and answering to inquires. Mama Wu not only greets and takes food order from the customers, she prepares the fresh ingredients on a daily basis. The siblings Emily, Tony, Yvonne and John would come and help serving the customers at weekends and during holiday.
" I am pleased that my daughters and sons would come and help us during weekends"- Papa Wu
There is little doubt that having the three generations working together strengthens the bonding between family members. They have made tremendous efforts in maintaining the reputation of their restaurant in the neighborhoods. Cross-generational communication in Chiu Chownese could be fostered especially between the first and third generations. Being committed to the restaurant, they uphold their Chiu Chow identity.
“ Some of our staff are Chiu Chownese and I do feel more amiable to speak in Chiu Chownese with them”- Papa Wu
“ Many of my friends have visited our restaurant and sometimes they are curious about certain terms in Chiu Chownese, I am happy to teach them. “- Emily Wu
“ We come across novel Chiu Chownese terms from our customers and we would ask our parents for further interpretation ” - John Wu
